Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between JET pumps and Multistage pumps?

Both pump types will deliver high pressure and flow rates as you increase motor size, however a JET pump differs to a multistage pump by only having a single impeller. Multistage pumps have multiple impellers. As you increase the number of impellers, you also increase the pump pressure. The flow rates are increased by increasing the size of the impellers and the thickness of the impellers.

A JET pump also has a jet venturi, which which helps create a vacuum. This vacuum allows JET pumps to draw water up to around 8.8 metres (normally rounded to 9). As you pull water from lower down the well, the discharge pressure and flow rate is reduced. For this reason, JET pumps are generally known as self priming pumps and used in spear applications. A downside of JET pumps is that they are far nosier than multistage pumps. This occurs as the path of water flowing through the pump is far more turblent. It recirculates water within the pump, thus making them nosier.

Multistage pumps do not have have a jet venturi, and thus are far less capable of creating a vacuum and thus are not able to draw water efficiently from below ground. Multistage pumps should not be installed in applications where the draw of water is more than a meter below the ground. Even at this small lift, the pump performance does drop off slightly and in the event of the water source running empty, a multistage pump cannot reprime, so will require the system to be re-primed manually. Multistage pumps are very quiet and normally used on whole of house applications where noise is a factor as taps are turned on and off all day.

Hoes does our ASC Pumps range compare to other brands?

We’ve been selling water pumps fro various manufacturers for over fifteen years now. Our own range of ASC pumps have been in the market for a little over 7 years. We consider our pumps to be some of the best quality pumps on the market. We have spent considerable amount of time on reseach and development to deliver our customers the best solution we could. Our pumps are made with the best quality parts on offer and we have not compromised our quality to save a few dollars.

Not only have we looked to market leaders such as Grundfos, DAB and Davey to find out where they were better than the market and introduce those features to our own pumps, but we speak to our customers, builders, plumbers and landscapers, to make sure we are bringing you a product that you, as the customer, need. We are constantly evolving our range and always looking for improvement within the range, but also introducing new models after we are totally satisfied with the extensive testing regime we put our products through. We are incredibly boyed by the success of our pumps in the market, and extremely grateful to our customers for trusting us with the pumping needs.

Why do I need a pump cover?

ASC recommends a pump cover for all external pumps, regardless of brand, model or construction material. You are investing a lot of money to buy a water pump. To ensure it lasts the way us manufaturers intend it to, a pump cover is essential. Your motors and electronic controllers are not water proof and not designed to sit outdoors in the weather all day.

A pump cover serves a secondary purpose of helping reduce the noise level of the pump. The cover will help absorb some of this noise. If your pump is being installed in a shed or out of the weather you don’t require a pump cover, but if it is sitting outside, just as you would garage your car or put sunsceen when outside, your pump should be covered.

Flooded suction Vs Suction lift.

Where ever feasible, you should install your pump with flooded suction rather than suction lift. Simply put, you want to have your water pump at the same level as your tank outlet or water level, rather than elevating it or installing the pump a distance away from the water source.

You will benefit with better pressure and flow by installing your pump with flooded suction. Of course if you are pulling water up from a well or a below ground tank, you have to install a JET pump to create a suction lift and draw the water into the pump. You are limited to a maximum depth of 8.8 meters for a standard JET pump.

The importance of pipe size

Your pipe size matters as it directly affects your flow rate and pressure for your system.

The size of the pipe will determine that maximum flow rate of your system. The larger the pipe, the more water we can flow through. We recommend that you use the same size pipework as your inlet on your pump for the suction side. Most pumps have a 25mm (1 inch) inlet and for small distances between the tank and pump, a 25mm pipe is recommended. You should never install pipework smaller as it causes cavitation in your pump.

The larger the pipe diameter, the less friction loss.  When you are moving water over long distances (20m or more), you need to bear in mind how much pressure is lost by friction in the pipework. Increasing your pipework size significantly reduces your pressure loss, as the friction loss is non linear.

How do I know what size water pump I need?

Sizing up the right water pump is not too difficult. Like anything, you want a pump with slightly more capacity than what you need. This ensures your pump is never constantly being pushed to the limit. It’s just as important to not oversize your pump too much. It will put extra stress on your motor bearings as well as the impeller and wear it quicker.

The staff at ASC will ask you a few quick simple questions to help us determine the right water pump for you. Our questions include:

  • What will the pump be used for? House or garden?
  • How many people in the household?
  • At most, how many taps will run at once?
  • How important is energy consumption?
  • Is noise level a factor when selecting your pump?
  • Are you looking for a partciular brand of pump?
Do I need a pressure tank?

Pressure tanks are a great addition for domestic pumps used to run a household. You will require varying flow rates when feeding an entire home. From flushing a single toilet, to running showers, garden taps and filling up your kettle, each tap runs at it’s own required flow rate.

When we do turn on our showers or other applications with large flow rates, used for extended period of times, our pumps are working within their optimum efficiency range. However small flow applications require the pump to operate at the extremes of the pump curve. This creates stress for the pump and over a long period degrade the pumps performance.
