Installation

It is important for all ThinTanks™ being the 1000 litre, 2000 litre and 3000 litre water tanks to stand on a solid base, that will not settle or move when wet.

The water tanks can be laid on sloping ground, along the length of the tank. Surface must be horizontal (LEVEL) across the width of the tank to allow the sides of the tank to be vertical.

Wall Mounted
  1. On an existing pavement, sloping away from a fence or wall, the surface must be built up to ensure the tank face is vertical and the back of the tank is flush against the fence or wall.
  2. Position first tank on prepared base and fix to fence or wall using bracket WB02 each end. Place brackets approximately 1400mm above base. Wall brackets need to be fixed to wall using Dyna Bolts on both ends of the brackets.

Brackets are required to ensure tank(s) cannot be accidentally pulled over by human effort.

Optional Extras

The Series 2 Thintank holds 8 ThinPots per row x 5 rows maximum.

Regular Maintenance Checklist

Every 3–6 months:

  • Clear gutters and roofs: Remove any leaves or other debris.
  • Clean the first-flush device: This helps ensure the first, dirtiest bit of rain is kept out of your tank.

Annually (at the start of warm weather):

  • Check for pests: Inspect insect screens and other potential entry points to prevent mosquitoes from getting into your tank.
  • Check for pooling water: Make sure there’s no standing water around the base of your tank, which can attract pests.

Every two years:

  • Check and remove sediment: Inspect the bottom of your tank for a buildup of dirt and sludge. While not harmful to drink in small amounts, this sediment can clog your pump and pipes. You can have a professional water tank cleaner handle this, or you can do it yourself.

To clean the inside of your tank yourself:

  • Note: For safety and best results, it’s recommended to have a professional plumber or installer clean the inside of your tank, ideally during the summer when the tank is empty.
  • Disconnect the pump: First, be sure to disconnect your tank from the pump.
  • Drain the tank: Take off the inlet on top of the tank and open the valve at the bottom to let the water and sludge drain out.
  • Hose it out: Use a pressure washer to thoroughly clean the inside of the tank.
  • Reconnect everything: Once all the sediment is gone, reattach the fittings and the inlet.

Regular Tank Inspection

Inspect your entire rainwater collection system every six months to catch any issues early.

  • Tank and Roof: Check the tank’s structure and roof for any holes or gaps and repair them immediately.
  • Catchment Area: Clear any leaves, droppings, or other debris from your roof. Be sure to disconnect your tank from the water flow before cleaning your roof.
  • Gutters and Filters: Remove any blockages from your gutters, leaf filters, and first-flush devices.
  • Screens: Ensure all screens on your tank and accessories are clean, secure, and undamaged. These are crucial for keeping out insects and vermin. If a screen is broken, replace it and check inside your tank for any intruders.
  • Internal Inspection: Look for signs of animals, insects, or algae inside the tank. If you find any, seal off any entry points and ensure no light is getting in.
  • Fittings and Pipes: Inspect all fittings, your pump, and pipes to make sure they are in good working order.

Tips to Reduce Maintenance

Preventative measures are the best way to cut down on maintenance.

  • Trim Trees: Cut back any trees or branches that hang over your roof to reduce the amount of leaves, and to prevent possums and other animals from getting on your roof and leaving droppings.
  • Maintain Screens: Keep your inlet and outlet screens clean. Giving them a quick wipe-down before a storm can ensure optimal water flow.
  • Manage Pests: If you have problems with birds or bats, consider installing filtration at your tap to ensure your drinking water is clean.
